Alan Dyck Artist Statement

Up to this point my photographic purpose was to create beautiful images. I transformed my visual art starting in September of 2018 out of a desire to change the world and people around me.  Both the ones I know and those I have never met.

In my series, Alternative Current, I use Photoshop to composite images into a complete thought.  I capture my own photographs to make the final images. Sometimes there are over a hundred pieces put into an image.

I use mannequins.  Certain light bulbs become the heads of specific genders as well as other electric parts to create the “Luminaries.” Luminaries are people in an alternate reality that is parallel to our world. They are here to show us things about our own situation.

My goal in this series is not to show the beauty of the world that may not be pretty but to evoke emotion.

The narrative may be spawned by a personal experience or a social situation, where I feel compelled to comment through my art.   I guide the viewer to find my meaning, knowing they will find their own thoughts regardless of my intent.
